Heat Recovery Ventilation Systems The Pros and Cons

Heat recovery ventilation systems are an ingenious way of regulating the quality of the air in a building. They consist of two ventilation ducts- one passes air from the outside into the building, and the other does the complete opposite. At this point, many may worry about the constant change in air temperature this could cause, but those fears are allayed by the systems most vital component- the heat exchanger. This works by allowing the heat of the outgoing air (i.e. the air travelling out of the building) to transfer to the air coming into the building with the two air streams coming into contact by being absorbed through ducting in the heat exchanger's cavity. Typically, most systems are also hooked up to a fan system which allows the user to control the temperature and humidity within the building. An alternative to this system is called the energy recovery system, or ERV. It works in a similar way to the HRVC, but does not strip away the humidity from the outgoing air completely. This is so that the humidity remains consistent throughout the building, where it is needed.

Advantages and Disadvantages to the Heat Recovery Ventilation System

Advantages

The advantage of heat recovery ventilation systems is that they allow you to keep your building warm without having to use extra energy in the form of a central heating system or fuel burning system. This inevitably reduces fuel consumption and energy costs, which is a real bonus if you happen to be located in a colder climate, or it is winter. Similarly, during summer, a heat recovery ventilation system will reduce the demand for air conditioning since it allows the cool air flow directly into the building.

Another benefit to having a heat recovery system is that it keeps excessive moisture at bay, which is better for the building itself as it prevents damp, as well as your furniture, and ultimately your health.

Disadvantages

Although arguable the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, heat recovery ventilation systems are initially expensive to install and there is no way of accurately measuring their ability to pay for themselves. In addition, they are most suitable in climates where there tends to be a wide range of temperatures between winter and summer, e.g. Western Europe, as opposed to climates which have a more consistent range of temperatures, e.g. Subtropical Asia. As with all systems, HRVs also require periodic maintenance, as filters will require changing at least every six months or more.

Healthy Habits That Everyone Should Follow - Rules For Good Health

Health is considered as one of the most precious thing and the best way to be healthy is to be happy, practice good habits, and maintain a healthy regular routine and a healthy way of thought. Here are some useful tips to make you fit and healthy.

15 Simple Rules for Good Health

1. You might heard of this nursery rhyme - 'Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise'. You should maintain a healthy routine after waking up early so as to perform the right time and ensure good health.

2. You should try to avoid anxiety and stressful conditions. Stress and anxiety is linked to many other health risks. So keep them away from you.

3. Don't suppress the natural urge to pass stool and urine. They help remove unwanted toxins out of the body.

4. Use antiseptic soap or liquid gel to wash your hands before eating.

5. Regular cleaning of the tongue to remove extra coatings is necessary for oral hygiene.

6. Brush your teeth after every meal, at least two times - in morning and at night before going to bed. Toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles is best. Brush the teeth for at least two minutes.

7. To remove food particles use a proper up and down motion with the brush and then rinse your mouth thoroughly. If brushing is inconvenient at some places, rinse with warm or plain water for at least 30 seconds.

8. Avoid chewing betel nut to prevent erosion and cavities in the teeth.

9. Floss regularly between the teeth and use a fluoride toothpaste or baking soda.

10. Replace your toothbrush every three months.

11. Do not use your nails, toothpicks or other pointed things to clean the teeth because it can wear away the gums resulting in complete exposure of teeth.

12. Take a well balanced nutritious diet containing all minerals, vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and water in the requisite proportions.

13. Never eat food while under stress, strain or worry as it hinders the digestive process. Avoid any other simultaneous activity as this forces the heart to pump more blood, showing down digestion and leading to various ailments including indigestion. Thus, you should avoid reading or studying while eating.

14. You sometimes tempted to over eat your favorite tasty foods. Avoid this as it distends the abdomen and leaves no space for water and air.

15. Breathe from the nostrils and not the mouth. Your nose is lined with small hairs that help filter the air. The air is warmed and moistened in the nose. Breathing from the mouth dries the pharynx, resulting in a dry cough and the formation of mucous.

Getting Treatments For Bronchitis

Today, there are a lot of studies about different approaches to heal different illnesses. Some are more inclined in the traditional way where it has been proven effective for a lot of years and some use new alternatives that was recently invented to treat certain illnesses.

There are millions of Americans affected by different kinds of respiratory illnesses, such as asthma, allergy, bronchitis, cold, and sinus. You have to consider that a simple cold can affect the way you do your daily activity. It will cause symptoms, such as runny nose, cough, feeling of weakness, and even mild to moderate fever. As you can see, having respiratory illness can significantly affect your performance at work or at school. In most cases, you can't even go to school or work because of the illness.

If a cold virus can affect the way you function, it is obvious that other worse kind of respiratory illness can affect your daily activities and tasks. For example, respiratory allergy can be very irritating where you can't go near objects that contain any allergens. You have to consider that your can be allergic to anything. Usually, people with respiratory allergies are allergic to pollen, and dog and cat hair containing dander. People with respiratory allergies will need to take a lot of precaution as allergy attacks may come any time they are exposed to certain allergens.

Asthma is also a form of chronic respiratory disease where it affects millions of Americans. This particular disease is characterized by occasionally constricting the airway, inflamed and it is also lined with a excessive amounts of mucus. Usually, emotional stress and overexertion can trigger asthma. However, there are some cases where allergies are also linked to asthma where it triggers it because of the allergens entering the system. Asthma sufferers feel shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, persistent sneezing and persistent coughing.

Bronchitis is also one of the growing respiratory diseases today. Affecting people living in areas where there are high levels of air pollution, and also commonly affecting smokers, bronchitis is a disease that can affect your daily task. There are mainly two types of bronchitis and these are the acute bronchitis and the chronic bronchitis. The acute bronchitis is usually a short term illness where it can easily be treated and managed. However in the chronic bronchitis, it may have permanent damage on the respiratory system and treatment can last up to 2 consecutive years. Sometimes, bronchitis can also be linked to allergy where acute episodes of bronchitis can be triggered by allergens entering the lungs.

Your sinuses can be affected if you have one of the mentioned illnesses. Sinusitis is usually closely associated with different kinds of respiratory illness where it can make it difficult for you to live your daily life. If you have sinusitis you will experience pain in the cheek, headache, toothache, and a feeling of squeezing around the eyes.

As mentioned before, there are different approaches in treating different respiratory illness. Some people prefer the tested and proven method of conventional medicine, while others prefer different approaches, such as holistic therapy.

Conventional medicine is where your respiratory illness will be diagnosed by basing on the symptoms. What conventional medicine do is help relieve the symptoms you experience and identify what causes the illness and treat it. Medical practitioners are usually the people who perform conventional medical treatment of respiratory illnesses.

However, another kind of treatment is called holistic therapy where it greatly differs from the medical approach. Although this kind of treatment approach is greatly debated, many people claims that this type of treatment is very effective in curing them from different kinds of respiratory illness. Rather than focusing on the signs and symptoms of the patient, holistic treatment focuses on the whole body of the patient.

Holistic therapy practitioners believe that the human body is surrounded by a vital force that protects the body from diseases. Theories have suggested that any irregularities in this force can trigger illnesses that include the respiratory illness. What they do is balance the flow of the vital force or life energy to cure the patient. However, medical professional have suggested that holistic therapy offers no more than just a placebo effect.

Whatever kind of treatment you prefer, you should consider consulting with the professionals first in order to make sure that the disease you have can be properly diagnosed. Holistic therapy are now being accepted by quite a number of hospitals and is integrated with conventional medicine to treat different kinds of diseases.

Get the Facts on Nebulized Sinus Treatment

If you are experiencing sinusitis or have experienced it before, you may well know about the discomforts, inconvenience and suffering that this illness brings. Colds, headache, coughing, congestion, facial pain and pressure, and post nasal drip are the most common symptoms of sinusitis. The sad part is that sinusitis can happen again and again, making it a vicious cycle for many individuals. There are almost 40 million Americans suffering from sinusitis every year.

The myriad of sinusitis medications available in the market today posts questions regarding the most effective sinusitis treatment. Among the newest sinus treatment methods available, thousands of patients have found nebulized sinus treatment to be one of the safest, most scientifically advanced and effective solution to beat sinusitis.

What is Nebulized Sinus Treatment?
This treatment method for sinusitis is also known as aerosolized therapy. Nebulized sinus treatment, as the first word indicates, uses a nebulizer to pump in liquid medication into the sinus areas. A nebulizer is an effective tool to administer medications to sinusitis and respiratory patients. This sinus treatment tackles all kinds acute and chronic sinus infections, as well as nasal allergies like allergic rhinitis.

What Kinds of Medications Are Used in This Treatment?
Doctor-prescribed liquid or liquid gel antibiotics, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory medications are used in this method.

How Does This Treatment Work?
Nebulized sinus treatment is a do-it-yourself system with the guidance of your doctor and a sinus compounding pharmacy that will issue your sinus treatment package. Once the nebulizer and liquid medications are delivered to you, you are ready and equipped to nebulize your way to sinus relief. The compact electronic nebulizer, also called as aerosolizing device, releases the liquid medication into mist for inhalation into the sinus and nasal cavity region. Treatment time only lasts approximately from 3 to 5 minutes.

How Effective is This Kind of Treatment?
The level of effectiveness, safety, ease of use and reliability of nebulized sinus treatment make this method different from all the other sinus medications out there. The key to its effectiveness lies in the small, minute mist particles going into the small openings of the sinus area (only 1.0 to 3.2 micron size aerosol particles). When the mist particles are very fine, bacterial infections in the hard to reach areas of the sinuses are killed and eliminated. No other sinus treatment has successfully achieved this, thus, nebulized sinus treatment is now the best choice for many sinusitis patients.

How Can I Avail of Nebulized Sinus Treatment?
When you feel that your colds are not going away soon and you are showing signs of a sinus infection, visit your doctor right away. You may also need to stop using any sinus medication you are taking, especially if you feel that it is ineffective. This may prevent further complications like drowsiness, sleeplessness and nausea. Your doctor will examine the extent of your sinus infection and tell you if you are suffering from acute or chronic sinusitis or nasal allergy. He may order further tests to make a certain diagnosis. Ask your doctor about nebulized sinus treatment for nasal sinus infections or nasal allergies.

Throw away the old sinus tricks that never worked. Get the most advanced, state-of-the-art sinus treatment method today.

Germs And Daycare

Germs And Daycare

Germs are everywhere. And day care germs abound. They are too small to see but we know they are there. Children can spread germs without ever getting sick themselves. They can catch colds, ear infections, diarrhea and worse. More severe illnesses like chicken pox, impetigo and hepatitis are also spread by germs. Toys are a vehicle for day care germs, so are unwashed hands of a caregiver after diaper change or blowing a child's runny nose. Runny noses don't always mean a child is sick, but the child can also be carrying something right under your nose so to speak, and you won't know it for several days until your symptoms start showing. So how can you cut back on day care germs and minimize your child's sick days Every child gets sick eventually with the average cold, but chances of spreading it to the other day care children and the sick child's family can be greatly reduced by following a few simple rules.

Always keep up to date with your child's immunizations. Schools will not enroll children in kindergarten without the immunization records filled out by the family physician. The same requirements must be met for daycare enrollment as well. Keep copies of your child's immunization records and have them ready to give to the daycare provider. You can request information on the other children enrolled in the daycare facility as well. All children enrolled in any daycare facility your child is going to should be immunized.

You should always have a backup plan for days when your child is sick and cannot attend daycare. Even if you suspect your child is catching something, he should be kept at home. The other daycare mothers will appreciate your compliance with this and they should follow suit. But there are times when some parents ignore the customary considerations surrounding children attending public environments and send their children off to daycare sick anyway.

At home, frequent hand washing can greatly reduce the chances of passing the illness on the rest of the family. As a general rule, washing your hands after coming in contact with your child is a good idea. One never knows if they are contagious with something and keeping your hands free of daycare germs, as well as any surfaces that the child may come in contact with, is good prevention. Door handles, eating utensils, toys, and plastic items such as beginner baby books should all be kept sanitized.

Toddlers should be taught right from the start to cover their mouth when they cough and proper toileting and cleanliness is a must. Stepstools in front of bathroom sinks enable children to wash their hands like big kids and colorful child-oriented soap dispensers add to the fun.

Children build immunities by being sick and then getting well. Daycare germs can speed up the process that would otherwise take place in the first years of school, even babies start building immunities by contact with other children. So a child who has never been in daycare and hasn't been sick very much will be thrown in a preschool that abounds with germs and his immunities begin to build but at the expense of lost school days. So whether parents like it or not, daycare germs do have their place in a growing child's life.

George Washington's Rules of Civility 110 maxims Based on a 16th-century set of precepts compiled for young gentlemen by Jesuit instructors

1. Every action done in company ought to be with some sign of respect to those that are present.

2. When in company, put not your hands to any part of the body not usually discovered.

3. Show nothing to your friend that may affright him.

4. In the presence of others, sing not to yourself with a humming voice, or drum with your fingers or feet.

6. Sleep not when others speak, sit not when others stand, speak not when you should hold your peace, walk not on when others stop.

7. Put not off your clothes in the presence of others, nor go out of your chamber half dressed.

8. At play and attire, it's good manners to give place to the last comer, and affect not to speak louder than ordinary.

9. Spit not into the fire, nor stoop low before it; neither put your hands into the flames to warm them, nor set your feet upon the fire, especially if there be meat before it.

22. Show not yourself glad at the misfortune of another though he were your enemy.

23. When you see a crime punished, you may be inwardly pleased; but always show pity to the suffering offender.

24. Do not laugh too loud or too much at any public spectacle.

25. Superfluous compliments and all affectation of ceremonies are to be avoided, yet where due they are not to be neglected.

26. In putting off your hat to persons of distinction, as noblemen, justices, churchmen, etc., make a reverence, bowing more or less according to the custom of the better bred, and quality of the persons. Among your equals expect not always that they should begin with you first, but to pull off the hat when there is no need is affectation. In the manner of saluting and resaluting in words, keep to the most usual custom.

27. 'Tis ill manners to bid one more eminent than yourself be covered, as well as not to do it to whom it is due. Likewise he that makes too much haste to put on his hat does not well, yet he ought to put it on at the first, or at most the second time of being asked. Now what is herein spoken, of qualification in behavior in saluting, ought also to be observed in taking of place and sitting down, for ceremonies without bounds are troublesome.

28. If any one come to speak to you while you are are sitting stand up, though he be your inferior, and when you present seats, let it be to everyone according to his degree.

29. When you meet with one of greater quality than yourself, stop and retire, especially if it be at a door or any straight place, to give way for him to pass.

30. In walking, the highest place in most countries seems to be on the right hand; therefore, place yourself on the left of him whom you desire to honor. But if three walk together the middest place is the most honorable; the wall is usally given to the most worthy if two walk together.

31. If anyone far surpasses others, either in age, estate, or merit, yet would give place to a meaner than himself in his own lodging or elsewhere, the one ought not to except it. So he on the other part should not use much earnestness nor offer it above once or twice.

32. To one that is your equal, or not much inferior, you are to give the chief place in your lodging, and he to whom it is offered ought at the first to refuse it, but at the second to accept though not without acknowledging his own unworthiness.

33. They that are in dignity or in office have in all places precedency, but whilst they are young, they ought to respect those that are their equals in birth or other qualities, though they have no public charge.

34. It is good manners to prefer them to whom we speak before ourselves, especially if they be above us, with whom in no sort we ought to begin.

35. Let your discourse with men of business be short and comprehensive.

36. Artificers and persons of low degree ought not to use many ceremonies to lords or others of high degree, but respect and highly honor then, and those of high degree ought to treat them with affability and courtesy, without arrogance.

37. In speaking to men of quality do not lean nor look them full in the face, nor approach too near them at left. Keep a full pace from them.

38. In visiting the sick, do not presently play the physician if you be not knowing therein.

39. In writing or speaking, give to every person his due title according to his degree and the custom of the place.

40. Strive not with your superior in argument, but always submit your judgment to others with modesty.

41. Undertake not to teach your equal in the art himself professes; it savors of arrogancy.

42. Let your ceremonies in courtesy be proper to the dignity of his place with whom you converse, for it is absurd to act the same with a clown and a prince.

43. Do not express joy before one sick in pain, for that contrary passion will aggravate his misery.

44. When a man does all he can, though it succeed not well, blame not him that did it.

45. Being to advise or reprehend any one, consider whether it ought to be in public or in private, and presently or at some other time; in what terms to do it; and in reproving show no signs of cholor but do it with all sweetness and mildness.

46. Take all admonitions thankfully in what time or place soever given, but afterwards not being culpable take a time and place convenient to let him know it that gave them.

47. Mock not nor jest at any thing of importance. Break no jests that are sharp, biting, and if you deliver any thing witty and pleasant, abstain from laughing thereat yourself.

48. Wherein you reprove another be unblameable yourself, for example is more prevalent than precepts.

49. Use no reproachful language against any one; neither curse nor revile.

50. Be not hasty to believe flying reports to the disparagement of any.

51. Wear not your clothes foul, or ripped, or dusty, but see they be brushed once every day at least and take heed that you approach not to any uncleaness.

52. In your apparel be modest and endeavor to accommodate nature, rather than to procure admiration; keep to the fashion of your equals, such as are civil and orderly with respect to time and places.

53. Run not in the streets, neither go too slowly, nor with mouth open; go not shaking of arms, nor upon the toes, kick not the earth with your feet, go not upon the toes, nor in a dancing fashion.

54. Play not the peacock, looking every where about you, to see if you be well decked, if your shoes fit well, if your stockings sit neatly and clothes handsomely.

55. Eat not in the streets, nor in the house, out of season.

56. Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for 'tis better to be alone than in bad company.

57. In walking up and down in a house, only with one in company if he be greater than yourself, at the first give him the right hand and stop not till he does and be not the first that turns, and when you do turn let it be with your face towards him; if he be a man of great quality walk not with him cheek by jowl but somewhat behind him, but yet in such a manner that he may easily speak to you.

58. Let your conversation be without malice or envy, for 'tis a sign of a tractable and commendable nature, and in all causes of passion permit reason to govern.

59. Never express anything unbecoming, nor act against the rules moral before your inferiors.

60. Be not immodest in urging your friends to discover a secret.

61. Utter not base and frivolous things among grave and learned men, nor very difficult questions or subjects among the ignorant, or things hard to be believed; stuff not your discourse with sentences among your betters nor equals.

62. Speak not of doleful things in a time of mirth or at the table; speak not of melancholy things as death and wounds, and if others mention them, change if you can the discourse. Tell not your dreams, but to your intimate friend.

63. A man ought not to value himself of his achievements or rare qualities of wit; much less of his riches, virtue or kindred.

64. Break not a jest where none take pleasure in mirth; laugh not aloud, nor at all without occasion; deride no man's misfortune though there seem to be some cause.

65. Speak not injurious words neither in jest nor earnest; scoff at none although they give occasion.

66. Be not froward but friendly and courteous, the first to salute, hear and answer; and be not pensive when it's a time to converse.

67. Detract not from others, neither be excessive in commanding.

68. Go not thither, where you know not whether you shall be welcome or not; give not advice without being asked, and when desired do it briefly.

69. If two contend together take not the part of either unconstrained, and be not obstinate in your own opinion. In things indifferent be of the major side.

70. Reprehend not the imperfections of others, for that belongs to parents, masters and superiors.

71. Gaze not on the marks or blemishes of others and ask not how they came. What you may speak in secret to your friend, deliver not before others.

72. Speak not in an unknown tongue in company but in your own language and that as those of quality do and not as the vulgar. Sublime matters treat seriously.

73. Think before you speak, pronounce not imperfectly, nor bring out your words too hastily, but orderly and distinctly.

74. When another speaks, be attentive yourself and disturb not the audience. If any hesitate in his words, help him not nor prompt him without desired. Interrupt him not, nor answer him till his speech be ended.

75. In the midst of discourse ask not of what one treats, but if you perceive any stop because of your coming, you may well entreat him gently to proceed. If a person of quality comes in while you're conversing, it's handsome to repeat what was said before.

76. While you are talking, point not with your finger at him of whom you discourse, nor approach too near him to whom you talk, especially to his face.

77. Treat with men at fit times about business and whisper not in the company of others.

78. Make no comparisons and if any of the company be commended for any brave act of virtue, commend not another for the same.

79. Be not apt to relate news if you know not the truth thereof. In discoursing of things you have heard, name not your author. Always a secret discover not.

80. Be not tedious in discourse or in reading unless you find the company pleased therewith.

81. Be not curious to know the affairs of others, neither approach those that speak in private.

82. Undertake not what you cannot perform but be careful to keep your promise.

83. When you deliver a matter do it without passion and with discretion, however mean the person be you do it to.

84. When your superiors talk to anybody hearken not, neither speak nor laugh.

85. In company of those of higher quality than yourself, speak not 'til you are asked a question, then stand upright, put off your hat and answer in few words.

86. In disputes, be not so desirous to overcome as not to give liberty to each one to deliver his opinion and submit to the judgment of the major part, especially if they are judges of the dispute.

87. Let your carriage be such as becomes a man grave, settled and attentive to that which is spoken. Contradict not at every turn what others say.

88. Be not tedious in discourse, make not many digressions, nor repeat often the same manner of discourse.

89. Speak not evil of the absent, for it is unjust.

90. Being set at meat scratch not, neither spit, cough or blow your nose except there's a necessity for it.

91. Make no show of taking great delight in your victuals. Feed not with greediness. Eat your bread with a knife. Lean not on the table, neither find fault with what you eat.

92. Take no salt or cut bread with your knife greasy.

93. Entertaining anyone at table it is decent to present him with meat. Undertake not to help others undesired by the master.

94. If you soak bread in the sauce, let it be no more than what you put in your mouth at a time, and blow not your broth at table but stay 'til it cools of itself.

95. Put not your meat to your mouth with your knife in your hand; neither spit forth the stones of any fruit pie upon a dish nor cast anything under the table.

96. It's unbecoming to heap much to one's mea. Keep your fingers clean and when foul wipe them on a corner of your table napkin.

97. Put not another bite into your mouth 'til the former be swallowed. Let not your morsels be too big for the jowls.

98. Drink not nor talk with your mouth full; neither gaze about you while you are drinking.

99. Drink not too leisurely nor yet too hastily. Before and after drinking wipe your lips. Breathe not then or ever with too great a noise, for it is uncivil.

100. Cleanse not your teeth with the tablecloth, napkin, fork or knife, but if others do it, let it be done with a pick tooth.

101. Rinse not your mouth in the presence of others.

102. It is out of use to call upon the company often to eat. Nor need you drink to others every time you drink.

103. In company of your betters be not longer in eating than they are. Lay not your arm but only your hand upon the table.

104. It belongs to the chiefest in company to unfold his napkin and fall to meat first. But he ought then to begin in time and to dispatch with dexterity that the slowest may have time allowed him.

105. Be not angry at table whatever happens and if you have reason to be so, show it not but on a cheerful countenance especially if there be strangers, for good humor makes one dish of meat a feast.

106. Set not yourself at the upper of the table but if it be your due, or that the master of the house will have it so. Contend not, lest you should trouble the company.

107. If others talk at table be attentive, but talk not with meat in your mouth.

108. When you speak of God or His attributes, let it be seriously and with reverence. Honor and obey your natural parents although they be poor.

109. Let your recreations be manful not sinful.

110. Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire called conscience.

General Facts on Lung Cancer Causes, Symptoms and Treatment For Lung Cancer

Educating yourself about the general facts on lung cancer is essential to help prevent acquiring the disease. As the number one cause of death among men in America and one of the major causes of death cases throughout the world, health experts are furthering their efforts in trying to unearth general facts on lung cancer, and how this disease can be so deadly.

Among the various type of cancer deaths, lung cancer is responsible for 29 percent of that. In fact, there are more death cases for lung cancer as compared to the data of deaths for prostate, breast, and colon cancers combined. Hence, you can begin protecting yourself now by arming yourself with the general facts on lung cancer before it's too late.

Causes Of Lung Cancer

When people think of lung cancer, they often associate it with cigarette smoking. Indeed, this is one of the leading causes of the disease. But it is not the only factor.

One of the major focus of research for health experts regarding lung cancer is the genetic factor. Most cancerous cells develop when there is an error in the mutation of DNA cells. That error in itself can be affected by other environmental factors as well, which has led health experts to go back to examining external factors that can contribute to the formation of cancerous cells.

Too much exposure to asbestos has been cited as one crucial environmental factor causing lung cancer. Asbestos is a kind of mineral that is made up of bundled up fibers and naturally occurs in the environment. These fibers, when inhaled by a person exposed to them, can be trapped in one's lungs and accumulate until it causes an inflammation on the lungs.

Another crucial factor that could elicit the development of lung cancer is inhaling secondhand smoke. Although cigarette smoking can increase your chances of acquiring lung cancer, those who inhale it are at a higher risk. Secondhand smoke consists of two types of smoke: those that are produced by the burning of the tobacco product and those exhaled by the smoker.

Please pay very close attention to these general facts on lung cancer, so you can avoid the factors that could put you at risk in acquiring the disease.

Symptoms Of Lung Cancer

Since it affects your respiratory system, common symptoms associated with lung cancer are related to such conditions affecting the respiratory illness.

It is a rare case for lung cancer to be diagnosed early, which is why awareness of the general facts on lung cancer is of extreme importance for early diagnosis.

Prolonged cases of cough.
Uncharacteristic wheezing.
Pain on the back, chest, or shoulder.
Coughing blood or mucus.
Constant shortness of breath.
Swollen neck or face.
Pneumonia or other respiratory infections, etc

Treatment For Lung Cancer

Before a treatment option is to be determined for lung cancer patients, it is important to diagnose its type and stage first. Here are some of the more common types of treatment:

1) Surgery This method of treatment is best only for patients who are diagnosed early due to the possibility of the cancer cells spreading to other parts of the body despite inability to detect it via scan.

2) Chemotherapy This treatment is best used for individuals with small cell lung cancer. Oftentimes, this treatment is accompanied by radiotherapy. This treatment is known as chemoradiation.

3) Radiotherapy This treatment is directed on the patient's head, in order to prevent the cancer cells from spreading to the brain. It is recommended only for individuals with small cell lung cancer and those who had their tumor removed via surgery.

Equipping yourself with general facts on lung cancer is your best weapon against the disease.

Gastroesophageal Junction Adenocarcinoma  Symptoms, Causes and Risk Factors

The oesophagus, also known as the food pipe is the tube that allows food to travel from the mouth to the stomach. The lower part of the oesophagus that connects to the stomach is called the gastroesophageal junction. The gastroesophageal junction has a ring of muscles which control the movement of food from the esophagus into the stomach, called the oesophageal sphincter. The gastroesophageal junction lies just below the diaphragm, beneath the lungs. Cancer that starts in the glandular cells of the gastroesophageal junction is known as gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma. Any cancer that starts in the glandular cells is termed as an adenocarcinoma. Gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma is considered to be a type of oesophageal cancer. Oesophageal cancer is prevalent to an undesirable point in India, being the 4th common cause of cancer related deaths in India. This statistic is thought to be due to tobacco consumption and poor nutrition in certain regions of India.

Symptoms
Unfortunately, most oesophageal cancers, including gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma, do not present any symptoms until they have grown large and spread to an advanced stage. When they do, they cause symptoms like:
Difficulty swallowing, known as dysphagia
Increased production of saliva
Hoarseness
Unintentional weight loss
Hoarseness
Painful swallowing or heartburn like pain
Nausea and vomiting
Chronic cough or hiccups
Black stools from gastrointestinal bleeding
Anaemia
Bone pain

Causes and Risk Factors
The cause of gastrointestinal junction adenocarcinoma, like most cancers, is not fully understood. DNA from the oesophageal cancer cells show changes in genes, but what causes these genetic changes (mutations) is not fully understood. There are, however, certain risk factors which are known to increase the risk of oesophageal cancer. These include:
Being male. Males are four times more susceptible to oesophageal cancer than females.
Increasing age. 85% of patients are above 55.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or Barretts Oesophagus, which cause changes in the lining of the oesophagus.
Tobacco use (Chewing or smoking)
Alcohol use
Obesity
Diet. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables decreases the risk, while eating processed meat increases the risk.
Achalasia, which is a disorder of movement of oesophagus.
Gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma is usually diagnosed by a gastroenterologist, a specialist in gastroenterology. Treatment is usually done by a gastroenterological oncologist. There are excellent cancer hospitals in Patna, Bihar, where one can find the leading oncologist in Patna.Cancer treatment in Patna is now highly advanced, and at par with international standards, and certain of its hospitals are on the list of the best cancer hospitals in India.

Folk Medicine - The Natural Solution

Long before orthodox medicine took center stage in the health care practices around the world people who were sick used to visit different kind of doctors. These doctors were not the steth-wielding, tech-savvy, white-coated medical geniuses of today. Mostly, they were bearded, wizened and gnarled humans looking less like physicians and more like witches or wizards. But they were revered, loved and even feared because of one particular skill they possessed - the healing touch.

In the early days of civilization, a vast majority of people were cut off from 'formal' medical care. Competent physicians were a luxury, to be enjoyed only by the super-rich and royalty. For everyone else, there was the local witch-doctor who was respected for his or her in-depth knowledge of folk medicine. This was the man or woman who treated everything from boils to gangrene, from cesarean to malaria and even small pox.

What is astonishing is that many of these so-called 'doctors' effectively cured their patients. What is even more interesting is that these medicines have lost none of their charms with the passage of time and more and more of them are finding their rightful place in mainstream medicines.

Remember how your grandma used to give you wild cherry bark for cough, or boil the twigs and leaves of red cedar to cure your cold? Well, that's folk medicine! If you were to ask your grandma how she learnt those techniques, she'd draw a blank! These unofficial health-related practices were passed on informally by word of mouth and were developed through observation and experimentation.

Illnesses ranging from the common cold and sore throat to warts, cancer, malaria, impotence and arthritis are said to be treated through folk medicine.

Folk medicine largely depended on the use of natural materials such as herbs, plant roots, trees, barks, fruits, insects and food items. Therefore, these practitioners paid a lot of attention to botany.

But the advent of modern medicine saw a decline in folk medicine as these 'rustic' practices were put under the microscope, dissected and then discarded as worthless. One more reason contributed to the decline of folk medicine.

Folk medicine started its downward slide with the advent of magical healing powers. Seedy people on the lookout for a few fast bucks were successful in capitalizing on the trust and faith of large sections of the society. Once their ruse came to light, people began to lose faith in folk medicine. Soon folk medicine was relegated to a gray area between orthodox medicine and quackery.

However, as more and more people have started to realize, there is a wealth of knowledge in traditional folk medicine. As people have started adopting the holistic way of life, there is a struggle to re-invent the precious folk medicine of yore. In recent years, the folk medicine of indigenous people is becoming more popular.

Some examples of folk medicines that we use in our daily life are:

Garlic - to reduce blood cholesterol levels
Chinese acupuncture - to treat blood clotting and migraine
The juice of neem leaves - to treat malaria
Poultice - to treat infected wounds

Turmeric - to treat bee or wasp stings

Today, amazingly more than two-thirds of the world's population rely on the healing powers of folk medicine at some point of their lives. For many nothing else is available or affordable. For some, nothing else is acceptable. And for a very few, nothing else works.

Famous Athletes Who Engage in Alternative Medicine

Over 2.5 billion dollars have been spent by the U.S. government to test the effectiveness of alternative medicine. However, very few seem to be effective.

Alternative medicine generally involves therapies or products which claim to provide health benefits, but they are largely unproven or nearly impossible to prove. There are even many forms of alternative medicine which cause great harm; for instance, the Black Salve, a product which claims to cure skin cancer instead severely destroys the skin and leaves behind a black scar. People have been severely disfigured due to the Black Salve.

Regardless, most forms of alternative medicine don't reach this level of severity. Acupuncture, for instance, has had many scientific studies dedicated to it and though many of these studies suggest that the pain relief is due to a placebo effect, there are a few which support it. Acupuncture is one of the most popular forms of alternative medicine today and used by many athletes:

NFL Fullback Uses Acupuncture

Tony Richardson is a hall of famer NFL fullback - considered one of the best fullbacks in history. Richardson suffered severely bruised ribs during the playoff season in 2010.

Being in intense pain made it nearly impossible for him to be in blocking stance. Instead of giving in and riding the bench throughout the entire playlist, he decided to try acupuncture before the first match.

After the treatment which involved around 80 needles, Richardson was able to play the entire game with minimal pain from the bruised ribs. This led to over 30 NFL athletes to use acupuncture as part of their recovery. Other athletes who use acupuncture are NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, NBA superstar Kobe Bryant and Tour de France winner Vincenzo Nibali.

MMA Former Champion Engages in Urine Therapy

One of the most beloved champions in his era - Lyoto Machida, a karate practitioner and MMA cage fighter actively engages in urine therapy - the act of drinking your own urine every day.

Once again, there is no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of urine therapy, but according to Machida's father, the urine acts as a cleansing agent. He says that not all the food you eat gets out, but drinking urine helps to flush it out of the system.

The reason Machida began to engage in urine therapy was also due to a cough he had for several weeks. He had tried all sorts of medicine, but the cough wouldn't go away. That was when his father introduced him to urine therapy. After several days of drinking his urine, his cough went away.

Machida's father compares urine therapy to vaccines. He mentions that sometimes a vaccine will involve injecting a milder form of the disease into the system. He says that by drinking urine, it sort of acts like a vaccine.

Urine therapy isn't limited to drinking your own urine. There are also cosmetic uses for it too including massaging one's gum or skin with synthetic urine. Other athletes who engage in this activity are boxing champ Juan Manuel Mrquez and baseball player Moiss Alou.

Bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger Promotes Chiropractic

Arnold Schwarzenegger, famous actor and bodybuilder has been seen promoting chiropractic care. Schwarzenegger says that he doesn't just recommend chiropractic - he says that it's a necessity.

Chiropractic involves the diagnosis and treatment of muscle and skeletal disorders - in particular back pain. Chiropractic along with acupuncture is one of the most mainstream forms of alternative medicine. Whilst there is not much evidence in support of acupuncture, several studies have shown chiropractic to be a possible treatment method for back pain. There is also a lot of conflicting evidence regarding the effectiveness of chiropractic care for other injuries.

Each year, billions of dollars is spent on chiropractic services. Chiropractic practitioners form the third largest medical profession - after doctors and dentists. Experts have even estimated that 90% of world class athletes use chiropractic care to help prevent injuries and improve performance.

Arnold says that he believes every family should seek a chiropracter, because he it's better than going to a hospital to receive shots and drugs for injuries. Other endorsers of chiropractic are golfer Tiger Woods, boxer Evander Holyfield and NFL player Jerry Rice.

Exercise After Baby

How soon after giving birth can I start exercising?

This is the biggest question women have. The answer might surprise you.

The first and most important thing you should do is begin exercising your pelvic floor and stomach muscles as soon as you feel ready.

This is crucial. Strengthening the pelvic floor helps to prevent incontinence, can heal tears due to giving birth, and reduce hemorrhoids if you have them. It is also essential if you want to regain a normal sex life.

Given how important this is for a woman, it's amazing how little attention is paid to it. In France for example, a woman who has given birth is entitled to 10 free postnatal sessions with a physiotherapist, paid for by the state. These one-on-one sessions ensure that all women are given the necessary information and advice on post-natal diet and exercise.

When you can resume other exercise depends largely on how much you exercised while you were pregnant (Davies & Ringdahl).

However, while some obstetricians tell you to wait until your six-week postnatal check before trying other forms of exercise, most recognize that getting out and about is good for you, not only physically, but also mentally. Walking, with your baby in a pushchair or stroller, is one of the best forms of exercise you can do, especially during the first few weeks.

The American College Of Gynecology suggests that if you exercised without problems right up until the end of pregnancy, you can probably safely perform your pregnancy workout - or at least some light exercise and stretching - as soon as you feel ready (ACOG 1994). Swimming is best avoided for the first six weeks, however, to minimize the risk of infection.

For those who did not exercise regularly during pregnancy, it is best to ease into exercise. Start with the pelvic floor with the pelvic floor exercises and some walking for the first six weeks, then as you begin to feel stronger, you can move onto other types of exercise.

Reasons to Delay Exercise:

There are some factors that might delay your return to exercise. These include:

If you experienced back or pelvic pain during pregnancy - check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

If you find it difficult to do pelvic floor exercises, or leak urine at times (e.g. when you cough, sneeze or laugh) - in this case, strengthen the pelvic floor before attempting vigorous exercises such as sit-ups, or exercise classes.

If this problem persists, consult your doctor. They may need to refer you to a women's health physiotherapist if the problem persists.

After a cesarean delivery your doctor will give you specific instructions about activities you can and can't do - you have to allow time for your incision to heal.

What about exercise classes?

Exercise classes can vary greatly in terms of intensity and what they involve. As a general rule it is best to avoid exercise classes until after the postnatal check. The exception would be one taught by a specialist in the field of postnatal exercise, or a women's health physiotherapist, or a low-impact class with plenty of toning and stretching. In this case be sure to let the teacher know you have just had a baby, and avoid any vigorous movements or bouncing.

Exercise and Breastfeeding

Women are often concerned about the effects of exercise on breastfeeding. There are two issues here. The first is how it makes you feel, the second is the effect on the flow of milk and thus the baby.

The first step is to avoid and exercise that makes your breasts sore. The best way to do this is to be sure that you wear a supportive bra. Feeding bras are often not supportive enough for exercise, so look for a comfortable, supportive sports bra. You might also find that breast pads will make you more comfortable.

The other issue concerns the baby's feeding. It is recommended that you always try to schedule your exercise for after you have fed your baby. Firstly, your breasts won't feel uncomfortably full, and secondly, your baby is more likely to feed properly. There is evidence that if you attempt to breastfeed immediately after rigorous exercise, the baby may shun the breast completely or feed less vigorously. Allowing 60 minutes after the workout before attempting breastfeeding will resolve this problem (Wright, Davies & Su).

How much exercise can you do?

There are no set rules on how much exercise you should do. As we said earlier, it will partly depend on your activity levels during pregnancy. You also have to listen to your body - if the exercise you do leaves you feeling wiped out for hours afterwards, it is too much. You should feel comfortably tired after a workout, but return to your normal energy levels within an hour.

Another sign of overdoing it during the first few weeks after delivery is a change in your vaginal flow. Called lochia, this is normal after childbirth, but if you exercise too hard it can become pink or red and flow more heavily - this is clear signal from your body to slow down. You should always check with your doctor if vaginal bleeding or lochia restarts after you thought it had stopped.

Excessive Cough Means Decreased Oxygen Content In Cells

Health-related reflections of several hundred Russian general practitioners propose that persistent issues with cough occur only in individuals with reduced oxygen pressure in body cells. Consider these principal scientific discoveries in more detail. We can learn about current popular info in respect to the mechanism together with the cause of excessive cough.

Cough is an essential protective process for the airways and lungs. Urge-to-cough receptors are located in the larynx and tracheobronchial tree. Reoccuring cough can trigger a substantial worsening of quality of life measures. Several distinctive disorders cause excessive coughing. The commonest acute sources are air pollution and upper respiratory tract infection. The commonest factors that cause chronic excessive coughing are postnasal drip, bronchial asthma, persistent bronchitis and GERD. Cough is a very universal clinical sign and popular treatments are predominantly unsuccessful. Learn more about cough from NormalBreathing.com.

Cutting-edge discoveries, as these Russian general practitioners allege, suggest a plain mechanism of excessive cough that is founded on ineffective breathing patterns and low oxygen pressure in body tissues in sufferers with coughing. Definitely, men and women with bronchial asthma, bronchitis, COPD and other breathing complications have heavy and fast breathing at rest when they are free of coughing predicaments. Their minute ventilation is nearly 12-16 L/min or in the neighborhood 2-2.5 times more than the therapeutic norm. In other words, these people suffer from severe hyperventilation. What are the consequences of hyperventilation syndrome?

To begin with, chronic over-breathing induces lower alveolar carbon dioxide levels. It is a acknowledged certainty that all neurons are particularly sensitive to CO2 levels, and decreased CO2 causes overexcited or irritable conditions of neurons. Consequently, it is apparent that lower alveolar CO2 content induce irritable state of cough receptors. As a result, if these sufferers increase their low CO2 pressure in the alveoli up to the medical standard, then the urge-to-cough receptors would not originate the excessive coughing reflex.

CO2 is also a effective dilator of the air passages. As a result of chronic over-breathing, the respiratory tract get constricted, and air stream in the bronchi results in greatly raised frictional stress on the surface of the bronchi. Note that men and women with coughing trouble widely have already inflamed bronchi, and this further lowers the size of bronchi greatly multiplying frictional stress that can create mechanical harm to tissues of bronchi. Some actions, like excessive coughing through the mouth, leads to severe destruction and increased inflammation to bronchi.

In addition , there is another outcome of lower carbon dioxide content in the alveoli on the human body. Hyperventilation invariably leads to lessened oxygen concentrations in body tissues. There are 2 particular mechanisms. In those men and women who have normal gas transfer in lungs (when O2 can normally travel into the blood from alveoli) overbreathing leads to low CO2 quantity in the arterial blood. On the other hand, arteries and arterioles are additionally highly sensitive to variations in CO2. Some medical studies assert that CO2 is the most potent vasodilator. Consequently, low CO2 content in the arterial blood generate constriction of blood vessels and this creates decreased oxygen transportation to all organs of the human body. Other people can develop predicaments with oxygen exchange in lungs and consequently low CO2 stimulates lung injury and exacerbates ventilation-perfusion mismatch. We can see that in all occasions hyperventilation diminishes oxygen tension in body tissues.

Lessened oxygen content in cells generates free radicals in body tissues and that depresses the immune system. Accordingly, chronic hyperventilation syndrome worsens diverse infections, such as respiratory tract infections, flu and colds. Existence of pathogens in respiratory tracts creates inflammation of bronchi and this considerably worsens troubles with excessive coughing.

Mouth inhaling and exhaling is another unfavorable factor that worsens coughing. This is as a consequence of decreases in alveolar carbon dioxide amount together with nasal nitric oxide, one more chemical that is fundamental for overall health. These factors are discussed on this page: Cause of cough.

In addition, these Russian general practitioners noticed that if their patients slow down their heavy and deep breathing and obtain standard alveolar carbon dioxide amount, their problems with severe cough will disappear altogether. Such consequences are attainable with the utilization of the Buteyko breathing reconditioning program or Frolov breath device since these techniques increase body oxygen amount. Oxygen Remedy and then Amazing DIY breathing device are other but great alternatives.

Ethno-Botanical Uses of Graviola

Graviola tree is found in warm tropical regions. This evergreen relatively small sized tree bears heart shaped edible fruit with white flesh. Not only the fruit of this plant but the leaves, bark, stem, roots and seeds all are considered extremely valuable medicinally. The ethno-botanical uses of the Graviola plant are numerous and it has been extensively used in traditional herbal remedies. Over the centuries tribal healers and medicine men have attributed several properties to the Graviola Plant. It is believed to be anticonvulsant, digestive, hypotensive, nervine, antispasmodic, sedative, antipyretic, antiparasitic and anthelmintic in nature.

The use of Graviola is not associated to a particular region or tribe; in fact the use of this plant is extensive and found in many regions. Records show that Graviola was used as an important part of herbal medicine in Amazonia, West Indies, Barbados, Togo, Borneo, Suriname, Brazil, Peru, Cook Islands, Malaysia, Curacao, Madagascar, Dominica, Jamaica, Guatemala, Haiti, Guyana and Guam. The traditional uses of the Graviola plant were numerous. Different parts of this plant were used for different ailments. The flower of this plant was believed to be helpful for bronchitis and cough. Problems like colitis, parasites, diarrhea, fevers, dysentery, mouth sores, hydropsy and lactogogue were treated with the fruit of the Graviola Plant. The fruit also possesses tranquilizing properties. Seeds of the plant were considered affective for astringent, emetic, carminative, head lice, insecticide, skin parasites, parasites, worms. The bark of the tree was asthma, asthenia, difficult child birth, coughs, hypertension, parasites, diabetes and as a heart tonic. It was believed to possess sedative properties. The leaf of the plant was used for a variety of different problems including arthritis and rheumatism in which the leaf is crushed mixed with olive oil and applied externally. It relieved symptoms of bronchitis, colic cough, asthma, and asthenia and was considered potent enough to fight ulcers and infections. It took care of parasites, worms, diarrhea, dysentery, indigestion, liver problems, gall bladder disorders, nervousness, palpitation, hypertension, malaria, diabetes, edema, lactogogue, grippe, fever and various skin disorders were treated with the leaf of Graviola Plant. As these miraculous properties of the plant gained attention and researches were conducted it was discovered that the plant produces a set of phytochemicals known as the Annonaceous Acetogenins. These chemicals have powerful anticancer and antitumor properties and are hailed as a miracle for cancer patients. The acetogenins show powerful cytotoxity towards various kinds of cancer cells and illuminate them. Researches prove that these chemicals are much more potent than the currently use chemotherapy drugs and do not harm healthy cells like the chemotherapy drugs do causing hair loss and extreme nausea.

When the miraculous qualities of plant were uncovered the, Raintree Company invested efforts to research about these properties and verify them along with other government and non government institutes. They prompted the indigenous population of Brazil to harvest the plant in huge areas. The company soon formulated the supplement Graviola Max by blending the pulp of leaves and stem of the Graviola Plant. Due to its 100% purity and top quality the Graviola Max supplement is not only used by victims of cancer but for general health.

End the Battle with Chronic Sinusitis

End the Battle with Chronic Sinusitis

End the Battle with Chronic Sinusitis

Are you suffering from persistent and long-lasting sinusitis symptoms? Your nose keeps running and running relentlessly? Is your throat perpetually sore? If you are experiencing these sinus and nasal discomforts for a long time now, it is time to wage a battle with chronic sinusitis.

What is Chronic Sinusitis?
Chronic sinusitis is a type of sinusitis that lasts for more than eight to twelve weeks. With chronic sinusitis, there is swelling and inflammation of the sinus cavity region. It could have started from a cold that never went away. Nasty symptoms such as headache, fever, fatigue, facial pain and pressure, post nasal drip, cough and congestion are experienced in chronic sinusitis, although sometimes, not all symptoms are present. It may show lesser symptoms than acute sinusitis (lasts less than 3 to 4 weeks) but longer lasting. In a bacterial chronic sinusitis, the mucous membrane produces fluids which are not like the usual in normal days. Imagine bacteria invading your system and blocking drainage for a long period of time. This definitely takes a toll on a chronic sinusitis patients body and daily activities.

Causes of Sinusitis
Aside from the common cold, sinusitis can be triggered by several factors. Climate and temperature can likely bring about symptoms of sinusitis. The cold, damp weather especially this fall season is the culprit of colds and sinus/nasal problems. Allergens in the environment like pollen, grass, weed, and animal dander are the main causes of nasal allergies or allergic rhinitis. Even so, a person with an impaired immune system makes it easy for bacteria to spread in the body, thereby causing chronic and life-threatening diseases. All of these factors can lead to chronic sinusitis infections.

How to Treat Chronic Sinusitis
Chronic sinusitis, if not treated properly, can make life miserable. The upper respiratory system is truly a vital structure that is in charge of the way we breathe and swallow, as well as maintaining the back of the throat clear of food and mucous. In chronic sinusitis, overproduction of the mucous membrane is present, and in days when symptoms are acting up all at the same time, it can be very overwhelming. There are many healing methods, medications and gadgets that can be used to combat chronic sinusitis. Nasal irrigation can be done with the use of netipots and irrigators. Natural healing herbs and vitamins can increase the chances of fighting the infection. Over the counter decongestants and oral antibiotics help alleviate congestion, stuffiness and bacterial infections. Alternative holistic methods like naturopathic, chiropractic are gaining notice and being tested by those who are looking for other forms of treatment.

New Sinus Technology Stops Chronic Sinusitis
There is a new way to end all chronic sinusitis battles. Nebulized therapy has proven to be the most effective sinusitis treatment as of today. With nebulized therapy, patients with chronic sinusitis have gotten rid of congestion, thick green mucous, facial pain, and other symptoms in days following the first treatment. Nebulized therapy works by using a compact nebulizer that pumps antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and antifungal medication into very fine mist, directly targeting the sinus infection. The small particles inhaled into the sinus region instantly kill the bacteria, thereby opening the sinuses and eliminating the infection. Nebulized therapy is doctor-prescribed assisted by a sinus compounding pharmacy.

Emphysema - The Facts

Emphysema - The Facts

Anyone suffering from a disease of the lungs knows how distressing the shortness of breath can be. Emphysema is a particularly acute lung disease in which the damage is permanent so it is important to take all steps possible to avoid these conditions in the first place.

Inside the respiratory system, there are very small sacs of air called alveoli and the passages that lead to these sacs of air are called bronchioles. In pulmonary emphysema, the bronchioles become permanently distended with air. This condition reduces the number of blood vessels because of the loss of elasticity in the lung tissues. Consequently, the ability of the lungs to provide oxygen continues to decrease and the person becomes breathless very easily.

The condition is more common in men and usually appears after the age of forty. It is thought that women may be protected by a hormonal factor but this has not actually been proven. This condition can cause disability and eventually death. The main cause of emphysema is cigarette smoking. However, exposure to pollution and dust on an ongoing basis can also bring on the disease. This becomes a risk factor in some industries where there are large amounts of dust. Also, people who suffer from chronic bronchitis may also suffer from emphysema. If these people are also smokers, it makes the condition even worse.

Not all smokers contract emphysema and it also occurs in non smokers. Some feel that the white cells in the lungs produce a substance called elastase. Smoke or dust interferes with the cells causing them to release this elastase. If this happens, it may attack the lung tissue.

When a person suffers from chronic bronchitis, the airways become blocked with mucous because of irritation by smoke, dust and other pollutants. This makes it difficult to breathe as the person must overcome the resistance of the mucous. Inspiration of air then results in distension of the alveoli. The elasticity of the lung tissue may also be weakened by bacterial infections which are common in chronic bronchitis.

Subcutaneous emphysema can also result from a broken rib that punctures the lung or from whooping cough.

The most recognized symptom of emphysema is breathlessness. This can be accompanied by a cough that can be brought on by the smallest amount of action. Simply laughing or talking can make the person breathless. There may also be discomfort after a meal because the lungs have expanded. Sometimes this can result in loss of appetite and resultant weight loss.

Some patients become cyanosed due to a lack of oxygen in the blood. This bluish discolouration is most noticeable on the lips and under the fingernails.

Emphysema can also affect the heart. The lungs become resistant to the flow of blood as the alveolar walls thicken. This means the heart has to work harder to force blood through the lungs, putting extra strain on the heart.

The progress of pulmonary emphysema may be slowed with treatment but it cannot be cured. Some bronchodilator drugs give relief, particularly if the patient also has chronic bronchitis. Breathing pure oxygen from a cylinder allows enough gas to enter the blood stream.

Surgery to reduce lung volume is a new, experimental treatment in which parts of both lungs are removed, decreasing the hyperinflation of the chest and improving breathing.

Emphysema can sometimes be slowed but lung damage cannot be repaired, so it is better not to begin smoking.

Electronic Cigarettes Side Effects

I have been a cigarette smoker for over 40 years.
During that time I have smoked ten's of thousands of cigarettes

and spent thousands of pounds, ruined my health and all for my craving for the drug nicotine.

Yes I am an addict, addicted to nicotine.

Over the years I have tried and failed to give up my addiction many many times.

Just some of the methods I have used to try and help me stop have been:- Hypnotism, it just did not work on me. Patches, I am allergic to them, I come up with big red sore marks when I put them on. Gum, made my jaw ach and could not find a flavour I liked. Inhaler, this just burnt my tong and I wanted a cigarette as soon as I put it down. Snuff, Now I really liked this one, there are many flavours and textures but you can look a bit funny using it all the time in the 21st century and yes it does make you sneeze and it's not too pleasant having to blow your nose all the time.

Now I know that all of the above have worked for other people, but not for me.

So at the age of 58 I had given up giving up!

Even though smoking cigarettes may one day kill me. Then six weeks ago my wife bought me an Electronic Cigarette Kit

I knew that she had wasted her money but I had no choice but to try it. Within two hours I had changed my mind!

It feels just like smoking a real cigarette you get (smoke) vapour from the electronic cigarette, that you inhale as if it were smoke. To me it was just like changing my brand of cigarette, all smokers have done that.

It now looks as if I don't have kick my nicotine habit to be able to live a "normal" life.

No Fire means No Smoke!

Nothing is burnt when you "smoke" an electronic cigarette only a vapour is created. When you breathe out it's similar to your breath on a cold and frosty winters morning, you can see it as you breathe out but then it instantly disappears.

No real smoke means that I can get my nicotine fix when and where I want to.

My first stop was down at my local pub. It was great to wipe that smug smile off the faces of the non smokers. There was me enjoying my vice without having to go outside and stand in the freezing cold.

And don't forget the smoking ban in Airports. Yes I can use my electronic cigarette even there. Then there is shopping malls, the work place and even company vehicles, ahhh!

No real smoke means, no smell, no passive smoking, no smell on your clothes.

So I have got some of my freedom back.

I can "smoke" every where!

That should be enough reason for me writing this but here is the Real Biggy!!

THE SIDE EFFECTS of an electronic cigarette

I can breathe freely again!

I was smoking 60 cigarettes a day. My morning smokers' cough could last two minutes and really began to hurt. Sometimes I felt as if there was a steel band around my chest.

The tars and toxins in the tobacco smoke were making me feel ill.

After six weeks of not giving up and using my electronic cigarette I feel great.

No morning cough, the steel band has gone and I sleep better.

I am not a doctor and I have not been to one but I know my own body, as I have had the same one for 58 years.

I can now breathe deeper and walk further than I could a few weeks ago.

From 60 cigarettes to 2-4 refill cartridges a day - just how much tar is NOT going into my lungs every day?

Smoking is not smart or clever but if you are like me and don't really want to give up, you really should give an electronic cigarette a try.

One thing I have forgotten to mention...I am saving a fortune!!
